Barbora Sharrock’s journey from New Zealand to Lithuania is a testament to the powerful ripple effect of diaspora engagement programs like Bring Together Lithuania (BTLT). Now a proud BTLT alumni and master’s student in Cybersecurity and Intelligence at Vilnius University, Barbora’s story highlights the profound academic, professional, and personal impact of reconnecting with her Lithuanian roots.

In a recent interview, Barbora shared insights into her experiences before, during, and after BTLT. Here are some key moments from that conversation, with reflections on how the program helped shape her path.

Reconnecting Through Heritage and Purpose

Barbora first heard about BTLT through the Lithuanian community in New Zealand. Though interested for years, academic schedules and seasonal differences delayed her application.

I grew up in New Zealand, so every time the program ran during the northern summer, it clashed with my winter exams, Barbora explained. But I always thought it sounded so cool. When I finally graduated university and was eligible, I jumped at the chance.

Despite some initial concerns about her Lithuanian language fluency and limited community involvement, she was accepted.

I didn't go to Lithuanian school or dance groups because our community wasn’t big enough. However, BTLT looks beyond that - it values Lithuanians everywhere, globally.

A Career Catalyst: From Software to Policy

During her BTLT internship, Barbora worked with Transparency International Lithuania - an unconventional choice for someone with a background in software development. Yet it proved to be a transformative match.

It was really cool to learn how Lithuania is tackling corruption and improving policies. I helped coordinate the Transparency School, which brought together people from over 80 countries.

This experience sparked her interest in the intersection of tech and policy, leading to further opportunities - including a policy-focused role through Create Lithuania.

Without BTLT, I wouldn't have landed my first job in Lithuania or had the confidence to pivot from tech into public policy.

Living and Thriving in Lithuania

A graduate student in Master’s Programme in International Cybersecurity and Cyberintelligence through the ARQUS European University Alliance, Barbora is considering staying in Vilnius longer term.

I've looked into local jobs and even more language courses. Lithuania really opened up for me through BTLT - their guidance helped me feel more confident after moving across the world.

She finds Vilnius surprisingly international, with diverse friends and a thriving expat community.

Before BTLT, I was working remote night shifts and not meeting anyone. The program brought me into the fold and connected me with locals and internationals alike.

The Power of People

What stood out the most from her BTLT experience?

It was the people. I’d meet someone at an event, and then see them again at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or another global Lithuanian network. It’s this web of connections that really stays with you.

The BTLT alumni network has also remained a constant in her life, sharing opportunities and cheering each other on.

We’ve all gone in different directions - some into nursing, arts, sports - but we stay in touch. If I see something that could help a fellow alumni, I send it their way.

Shifting Perspectives

Coming from New Zealand, Barbora had previously only experienced Lithuania in winter, mostly during family visits.

Vilnius is a completely different city in the Summer. I was maybe subconsciously thinking that moving to a smaller city/country would be a limiting factor for me, but I feel like I've actually had an upgrade to my lifestyle and career opportunities.

Final Thoughts

Barbora Sharrock’s journey with Bring Together Lithuania exemplifies the program’s mission - to reconnect diaspora youth with Lithuania in meaningful, transformative ways. Her experience is not just a story of professional development, but also of belonging, identity, and rediscovery.

BTLT changed everything for me - from my career path to my relationship with Lithuania. I came here to try it out, and now I'm building a life here.
